Indonesian Artists in HK International Art Fair

Some Indonesian artist’s works were presented in Hong Kong International Art Fair 2011. The works were brought by some galleries that participated in the International Art Fair.

Edwin’s Gallery presented paintings and installations with the theme “Pinochio Syndrome” by Heri Dono who is at the same time conducting a solo exhibition in Berlin. Heri Dono, born in 1960, is known being heavily influenced by wayang (Javanese folk) mythology. Some of his works exhibited at the fair such as an installation titled Fermentation of Nose or paintings titled Pinochio Syndrome and Petruk Hybrids, migh remaind people of Petruk, a humorous and satirical character in wayang stories as well as of the characteristics of the Italian folk wooden doll. This work was establishing a connection between local and global themes.

Other galleries, such as Magelang’s Langgeng Gallery in Central Java, showcased an installation by artist Yuli Prayitno called Like Noah with a Small Canoe consisting of a wooden boat containing plastic bottles of various shapes and colors; and Bucket Splashes Series resin paintings by young painter Arin Dwihartanto Sunaryo.

Vivi Yip art room of Jakarta exhibited Bibliotea, an installation by artist Syagini Ratna Wulan that comprises items such as a wooden table, 30 books of art and encyclopedias, tea cans and boxes, as well as a video.

Ark Gallery of Jakarta presented an installation by Jompet Kuswidananto titled Anno Domini that combines Javanese architectural treasures — as part of the history of colonization — represented by the costumes and music instruments, and works of artists Wedhar Riyadi and Wimo Ambala.

Other Indonesian galleries that also joined the art fair held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center include Nadi, Umahseni of Jakarta and Platform 3 of Bandung.

Hong Kong International Art Fair was held from May 26 to 29, 2011, followed by 260 galleries form 38 countries.
