His performance is  so modest. Everywhere  he always wear “sarong”, a traditional dress of Bali. That is one of his special characteristic in his daily life. But you should know that he is really a great painting collector in Bali, Indonesia. Yes, he is Agung Rai.

His complete name is Anak Agung Gde Rai, but he is better known as Agung Rai. Born in Peliatan, a little beautiful village in Ubud district of Gianyar town, Bali province, Indonesia, in July 17, 1955, Agung Rai started his carrier as a painting vendor when he was eleventh years old.

Initially he  wanted to be a painter like as his friends generally in his village. Nevertheles, after tried learning to paint he thought he didn’t talent  to be a painter.

But, he really loved painting world so much. And he had no other skill to work. So he tried to help his friends for selling their paintings. From here Agung started to be a vendor. He sold paintings to tourists which visiting Bali beaches, such as famous beach Sanur and Kuta. About ten years he became painting vendor until he could buy a piece of land and build a gallery. Starting in 1980 he has been seriously collecting many paintings from the famous artists.

Now Agung Rai is one of  great painting collector in Bali, even in Indonesia, with some art galleries and an art museum. At his galleries and museum we can enjoy hundreds of various kinds of paintings from many famous artists be  Indonesian especially Balinesse  and foreigner especially European.   They are, for instance, Affandi, Made Wianta, Ida Bagus Made Poleng, Anak Agung Gde Sobrat, Antonio Blanco, Arie Smith, Rudolf  Bonnet, Le Mayeur, William Gerard Hofker, etc.

His art museum, Agung Rai Museum of Art (ARMA) become a center of cultural activities in Bali, such as painting exibhition, art performance, theatre, art workshop and seminar.

Agung Rai is often invited to held exibhition in Indonesia and foreign such as in Australia, Japan, USA, Germany, and Holland.
